Pakistan to explore Eurobond tokenisation after cabinet approval, Aurangzeb says

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has said Pakistan is reviewing the possibility of tokenising its existing Eurobond debt and will seek cabinet approval before inviting proposals for the initiative. He made the remarks on Monday while delivering a virtual keynote address at a dialogue on digital assets and the future of banking, organised by the Pakistan Banks’ Association in collaboration with LUMS.

Aurangzeb said the government was in discussions at this point and looked forward to cabinet approval before moving ahead with issuing a request for proposals. He also identified remittances as another potential use of tokenisation, saying Pakistan received $41.6 billion in remittances in the previous fiscal year, while first-quarter inflows in the current year suggested the figure could exceed $44 billion.

The minister said Pakistan’s journey from macroeconomic stability towards sustainable growth required fiscal discipline, stronger exports and greater private investment. He added that financial innovation should reduce the cost of doing business and bring more people into the formal economy, while operating within strong regulatory safeguards. Pakistan has established a statutory framework through the Virtual Assets Act 2026, with the Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority responsible for licensing and supervision.
