Glenn Maxwell retires from international cricket after 14-year career

Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket, ending a 14-year career that made him one of the most explosive limited-overs batters of his generation. The 38-year-old, nicknamed “The Big Show”, announced the decision on Tuesday on The Final Word podcast, a day after being overlooked for Australia’s Twenty20 series against England.

Maxwell had already retired from one-day internationals last year, but had kept the door open for Twenty20 cricket. His final international appearance came against Oman at the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka in February 2026. He said he needed to invest more time in his body to get through the remaining tournaments of his career.

Across his career Maxwell played 149 one-day internationals, scoring 3,990 runs, and 130 Twenty20 internationals, scoring 2,897 runs at a strike rate of 154.42, leaving him Australia’s third-highest T20 international run-scorer. He also played seven Tests, took 136 international wickets, and won three World Cups — the 2015 and 2023 ODI titles and the 2021 T20 title. He will continue in the Big Bash League while stepping away from domestic 50-over and red-ball cricket for Victoria.
