UPDATE — Selling returns at PSX as KSE-100 slips below 167,000 in Friday morning trade

Selling returned to the Pakistan Stock Exchange on Friday morning, ending the four-session rally for now, with the benchmark KSE-100 index losing more than 200 points in the opening minutes of trade. At 9:50am the index was hovering at 166,957.17, down 236.26 points or 0.14 percent from Thursday’s close of 167,193.44. Selling was seen in automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, fertiliser, oil and gas exploration companies and oil marketing companies, with index-heavy stocks including HUBCO, MARI, PPL, MCB, MEBL, NBP and UBL trading in the red. The pullback follows Thursday’s strong session, when the index gained 1,456.68 points to close at 167,193.44, its highest finish since early October. For ordinary readers, a soft morning after four rising sessions is normal profit-taking, not a verdict on the whole market. The day’s direction will depend on whether buyers return later in the session or whether selling spreads, so the close — not the first hour — is the number that matters.
