UPDATE — Lula wins Brazil’s presidential runoff with 51.8% of the vote

Brazil’s electoral court has declared leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva the winner of Sunday’s presidential runoff, defeating right-wing Senator Flavio Bolsonaro to secure a fourth non-consecutive term. With 100% of the vote counted, Lula led by nearly 4.4 million votes, taking 51.8% against Bolsonaro’s 48.2%.

The result reverses the first round, when Bolsonaro led with about 47% against Lula’s 45%, making Lula the first candidate since direct presidential elections returned in 1989 to win after finishing second in the opening round. Bolsonaro refused to concede, calling for the result to be annulled over a last-minute decision to extend voting by two hours, a request both candidates had made.

For emerging markets including Pakistan, the outcome matters because Brazil’s policy direction shapes global commodity and trade politics, and Lula’s win halts a rightward shift that had been gaining ground across Latin America.
