Karachi fines 490 profiteers and seals 15 shops in a week of price checks

Karachi’s district administrations fined 490 profiteers and sealed 15 shops during a week of price checks from 19 to 25 October, imposing fines of more than Rs2.099 million and issuing warnings to 618 shopkeepers. Assistant commissioners inspected prices at more than 2,500 locations across the city, finding prices satisfactory at over 1,000 of them.

Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi, chairing a meeting of deputy and assistant commissioners on Tuesday, ordered indiscriminate action against habitual profiteers, warning they would be arrested and given maximum punishment under the law. Officials were directed to visit markets daily to check prices of bread, flour, eggs and other essential commodities and to continue strict legal action against violators. The drive matters for households because overcharging on daily essentials hits fixed incomes hardest, and officials say the daily market visits will continue.
