The United States State Department has approved the sale of 500 Patriot PAC-3 interceptor missiles to Ukraine for an estimated $2.1 billion. Lockheed Martin is the principal contractor for the sale, which is aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s air defences against Russian attacks on energy and civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine will pay through contributions from Canada, Germany and Norway routed via the US JUMPSTART programme, along with national funds financed by the European Union’s Ukraine Support Loan. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had said earlier in the week that Ukraine had waited almost a month for sign-off on critical missile supplies.
The approval is a defensive-weapons deal, not a new troop commitment, but its timing matters: it comes as Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure continue and as Kyiv warns its interceptor stocks are running low. The missiles will help Ukraine shoot down incoming missiles and drones, though delivery schedules were not disclosed.
