Voting is under way across the United States on Tuesday, November 3, in midterm elections that will decide control of Congress for the final two years of President Donald Trump’s term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are being contested, along with 36 governorships.
More than 57 million Americans had already cast ballots before Election Day, according to the University of Florida Election Lab and an Associated Press analysis — well above the just under 44.5 million early ballots recorded at the same point in the 2022 midterms. Early votes include both in-person early voting and mail ballots returned ahead of polling day.
Polls close in waves across six time zones, with the first closures at 6pm Eastern time in parts of Indiana and Kentucky and Alaska closing last at about 1am Eastern on Wednesday. Early totals show turnout, not who voters chose, and closely fought races may take days to finalise as mail and provisional ballots are counted.
