Rubio says US does not want Pakistan targeted by terrorism, backs diplomacy on Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said Washington does not want Pakistan to be targeted by terrorism and acknowledged Islamabad’s concerns over cross-border attacks from Afghanistan. Outlook India, citing News18, reported his remarks at the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Atlanta on 1 November.

Rubio said Pakistan was concerned about terrorist attacks sponsored from Afghan territory and felt the Taliban had not done enough to constrain them, adding that Pakistan had taken action in response. He linked the remarks to the latest flare-up on the Pakistan-Afghanistan frontier, where firing was reported in South Waziristan in late October.

In separate remarks at the same meeting, Rubio said US President Donald Trump preferred a diplomatic solution to the standoff with Iran and had not yet decided whether to resume military operations against Tehran. The comments come days before the United States holds its midterm elections on 3 November.
