The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has received a record 7.5 million income tax returns by 30 October 2026, up from 5.7 million by the same date last year — an increase of 1.8 million filings. The figure breaks all previous records for tax compliance in Pakistan, according to Business Recorder. The surge comes on the final day of the extended filing deadline for Tax Year 2026. Saturday 31 October is the last date under the FBR’s latest extension, after the original 30 September deadline was pushed forward twice. Tax bar associations have asked for a further 34-day extension, arguing that the filing notification was issued late on 2 September, but FBR sources say no further extension is planned and penalties may follow for non-filers. The record count matters even though filings and revenue do not always move together: by 29 October, 7.3 million returns had generated about Rs85 billion, compared with Rs88.5 billion a year earlier. For ordinary taxpayers, the practical point is simple — the deadline is today, and late filing risks a penalty. Sources: Business Recorder, Profit (Pakistan Today).
