Karachi court sentences policeman to death in fake encounter case

A Karachi court has sentenced a police official to death after finding him guilty of killing a young man in a staged police encounter in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar area. The Model Criminal Court East handed the death sentence to Shaheen Force police official Shahryar, while two co-accused police personnel, Nasir and Faisal, were sentenced to life imprisonment. All three convicts were also ordered to pay 500,000 rupees each as compensation to the victim’s family. According to the prosecution, Shaheen Force personnel signalled 26-year-old Amir Husain to stop near Aladdin Park during snap-checking on 27 December 2022. When he did not comply, officers chased him into a residential apartment and opened fire. The officials initially presented the incident as an encounter, but a case was later registered at Shahrah-e-Faisal Police Station in 2022 under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code. The verdict closes a case that has run for nearly four years and underlines a basic principle: a police encounter claimed on paper must still stand up in court when the facts say otherwise.
