IT exports rise 18% to $1.25 billion in first quarter as freelancers earn $550 million

Pakistan’s information technology and technology exports rose 18 percent to $1.25 billion in the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27, July to September 2026, helping total exports grow 11 percent to $11.2 billion, according to the Finance Ministry’s quarterly scorecard. Freelancers alone generated $550 million in the quarter, up 46 percent from a year earlier.

Merchandise exports reached $8.5 billion, up 8 percent and their highest level in 20 months, while services exports rose 23 percent to $2.7 billion. Workers’ remittances increased 14 percent to $10.9 billion, led by Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the UK and the EU, and foreign direct investment rose 20 percent to $720 million.

The current account deficit widened slightly to $874 million from $755 million a year earlier, showing that stronger exports and remittances have not yet closed the external gap. For young workers, the standout figure is freelancing: a near-50 percent jump in one year underlines how much of Pakistan’s new export growth is now coming from individuals selling digital services abroad rather than only from factories.
