The government has raised petrol prices by Rs 1.54 a litre and high-speed diesel by Rs 2.16 a litre, with the new prices taking effect from Tuesday, 27 October, according to the Petroleum Division notification reported by Dawn. Petrol now costs Rs 379.25 a litre and diesel Rs 395.82 a litre.
The notification keeps heavy taxes in place, with levies of about Rs 114 a litre on petrol and Rs 100 a litre on diesel. Officials link the revision to turbulence in global energy markets and the Middle East conflict, which has kept international crude prices elevated.
Alongside the price change, the government has revived austerity steps, including markets closing by 9 pm and a 50% cut in fuel allocations for official vehicles for three months. For households, the immediate effect is higher transport and goods costs, since diesel powers freight and much of the country’s transport.
