Peace negotiators from Ukraine, Russia and the United States have agreed to meet at a technical level in the first half of November in Abu Dhabi, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Friday, adding that he hoped a meeting of the countries’ leaders would follow. The Kremlin also confirmed that talks were planned for the first half of November in Abu Dhabi in a trilateral format. Zelenskyy said he had spoken with US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff after their meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin earlier in the week. He stressed that any agreement would need strong security guarantees for Ukraine and funding for ten years to maintain its army, and that Europe should also be involved. Hopes of a breakthrough remain slim: previous US-led rounds stalled in February, a similar meeting expected this month never materialised, and Russia continues to demand territory it does not fully occupy. Still, even a technical meeting matters for Pakistan and other countries watching energy prices and global trade, because any path toward a ceasefire would ease one of the world’s longest-running sources of uncertainty.
